SEPTEMBER 2014 IN FILM

Weird and productive month.

I’ve decided to start listing shorts thoroughly and separately (rather than sporadically) — in an attempt to both take the form more seriously, and encourage myself to seek out more short-form, experimental work. I’m in the the process of doing the same for literature, and am excited to see where that takes me. Perhaps I also simply felt the need to compensate for the very few feature-length films I saw this month, as I was still busy with Film POP, a 5-day sidebar of films I’ve been working on since March, and which you can read about herehere and here (French).

Now, to catch up with school and see as many films as I can at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma.

AUGUST 2014 IN FILM

Still busy prepping Film POP (proper post on this later), but some downtime allowed me to get my film-watching mojo back, so-to-speak. Great to watch films for sheer pleasure and personal growth, after months of forced privation. This month also possessed me with the urge to read, moreso than ever. Finished Gibson’s Burning Chrome, read his Idoru and started All Tomorrow’s Parties.

And then on the 24th, I was half-drunkenly fucking around on the Tumblr app, and I inadvertently deleted this list. While I reconstructed it from memory to the best of my abilities, the nagging suspicion that I’m forgetting a film remains. (Interestingly, Boyhood is the last film I remembered, which had me seriously consider its flaws.)

Highlights include: the films I bothered to write about (click-through); an informal month-long 80s marathon; Stéphane Lafleur’s excellent Tu Dors Nicole; the new Yuya Ishii film and the gross-out comedy Wetlands (one of the last films seen at this year’s Fantasia Int. Film Festival). Oh, and the Ghibli doc!

JULY 2014 IN FILM

Finalizing a small essay on the Emmanuelle series. Working for the Fantasia International Film Festival; catching a few films there (bracketed T’s stand for theatrical viewing), hosting others (including the world premiere of the excellent The Creeping Garden, and the screening of lovely Josephine Decker’s Thou Wast Mild and Lovely, not archived here because we went for beers instead of watching the film again). Squeezing in a few films for fun, going nuts about the Scream Factory label (mental note to pursue the Tobe Hooper marathon, before transitioning into Abel Ferrara next month). Highlights: Miike’s welcome return to high-energy slapstick comedy with The Mole SongKumiko, Demon of the Lute, Guardians of the Galaxy and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 — perhaps my favorite slasher sequel since Slumber Party Massacre 2 and the ever-amazing curveball that is Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Currently reading: William Gibson’s Virtual Light (1993).

JUNE 2014 IN FILM

I apologize again. These logs are boring, embarrassing and unsubstantial. Consistent with June 2013, this month consisted of a lot of unrecorded, unfinished media, opposite a handful a finished media (below). Unlike last year’s June, however, this month has an incredibly minimal amount of media consumed for my own pleasure. Time is less to blame than a head space I’m still in the process of figuring out. ‘Till next time.

MAY 2014 IN FILM

It seems like this has become a strange confessional; the space where I apologize to the void of the Internet. So here I go again: I’m sorry for this terribly boring redacted watch log, or general lack of posting. It’s been a really tough month, and I’m now focused on bouncing back and not being 100% awful at work and in life.* Also, I’ll divulge the blanks once I can. Now, much in the same way I would never include an unfinished film on this list, I would also never include a film I fast-forwarded through. Except I just did, with two of David DeCoteau’s morbidly fascinating 1313 films. As they were both truly unique endurance tests (which I clearly failed), and the absolute bottom of the filmmaking barrel, I thought they deserved to be archived in this extension of my brain I call a blog. In any case, the highlight of my month isn’t on here, as it was finding the time to finish reading William Gibson’s Sprawl trilogy. That weekend where my girlfriend and I watched Showgirls, Body Double and Godzilla (yes, Godzilla) is a very close second. Anyhow, please don’t abandon this ship just yet, I swear I’ll be back with something interesting soon.
*I should definitely try to figure out what it is about this time of year that consistently has me feeling so awful. I do know but I should probably work on getting better as this is getting predictable.

SEPTEMBER 2013 IN FILM

Did not write, watch or blog much at all this month. For that, I apologize. But I have a piece in Fangoria #328 next month, and if you read French, you can keep an eye out for a short essay I wrote on James Wan for Panorama-cinéma. It should find its way online as soon as I find a moment to edit it. In October, I’ll try to focus on horror films, seeing as much as I can at the FNC and keep up with whatever school throws my way.
